HOW MOVEMENT JOINTS WORK...

A Movement Joint, otherwise known as an Expansion Joint is an intentional interruption in the tile or flooring surface to allow for natural movement.

Movement Joints are an effective way to protect ceramic and other hard floor coverings from the day to day stresses that can cause cracking, tenting or popping on the surface. It is also important to include Movement Joints to prevent any cracking in the grout. Movement Joints are designed to absorb any heat induced expansion and to absorb vibration and movement.

It is often regarded that Movement Joints spoil the appearance of an expanse of beautiful flooring, often clients prefer not to use them. However specifiers and installers know the importance of installing these joints in order to protect the floor and finish, they have a duty to provide both good advice and high quality workmanship. Architects are also required to specify products that are fit for purpose and conform to building regulations.

Flooring layers: The joints sit on top of the adhesive and the matting, between the tile joints

Movement Joints are available in PVC, aluminum, stainless steel and brass. PVC Movement Joints are a good solution, however aluminium based profiles will adequately protect the majority of projects. Stainless steel profiles will provide the greatest strength and are the least visible due to the design of the profile. Brass profiles are generally used on prestigious projects where aesthetics outweigh the cost.

Not only can our Movement Joints cope with heavy stresses and distribute these evenly between the foundation and floor covering, they can also prevent conduction of noise from footfall. Even floors subject to heavy stresses remain in better condition for longer when our Movement Joints are specified.
